Banstead Road

It is difficult to match this old postcard with any aspect of the present Banstead Road. Can anyone suggest where the photograph was taken from? Or has the card been wrongly titled?

Tony, I think that this card is incorrectly titled. I have looked at the original and on the reverse it says "Sutton Lane not Banstead Road". I then looked at it under a magnifying glass and very faintly in the distance, between the tree and the pole in the middle of the image, is the unmistakeable shape of Banstead Asylum. This suggests that the image shows the position of the roundabout at the top of Winkworth Road or perhaps somewhere further along Sutton Lane by, or past, Greenacre School.

The consensus is that this card is wrongly titled, that it is a view of Sutton Lane looking north, and that the viewpoint was south of the Winkworth Road/ Croydon Lane roundabout, although Winkworth Road was farmland when this was taken. The white house on the left is still there, at the junction of Sutton Lane with Winkworth Road. The thoroughfare to the left before the house is now Flint Close, whilst that to the right is now Croydon Lane South, although a cul-de-sac at this end, with no vehicular link to Sutton Lane. The date of 1925 is an estimate.
