Chipstead Way WoodmansterneUndated view looking northward taken from around 90 Chipstead Way, possibly taken around 1950.
Missing from this view are the Church Hall and adjacent 8 houses (1A - 3D) which were built around 1957/58.
Behind the camera is the very steep hill which Banstead Coaches Bedford local bus service, known as the Candyfloss, began as a 45 minute round service in 1959. It ran like clockwork come rain or snow ! (See picture #360)
The majestic old oak tree on the left was removed about a decade ago.
Those who lived here will remember Pancake Day, when residents would race against each other from here to the church hall while balancing & flipping their pancake in a frying pan.
Other events along here included the annual May Queen Procession.

My friend, Janet Bigmore, lived near that tree. I remember the church hall being built and as I was a brownie we used the hall weekly. The smell of new wood when you went inside has stayed with me. We used to have our Xmas Sunday school parties there and I believe I queued there with my parents and most of the village to get a polio jab in the 1950s.
