ST PETER'S CHURCH, RECTORY LANE, WOODMANSTERNE, c1910

Undated view inside St Peter's Church after it was rebuilt around 1877 and before the North Wing extension was added on the LHS c1960.

Woodmansterne appears in the Domesday book as "Odemerestor" [translated as (W)ode = Wood, Mere = pond, Tor =Hill] and had a church then.

Amongst the many paintings done by the artist Constable is one of the previous church building, drawn for the Lambert family who lived in the area for centuries and owned lots of land and properties hereabouts.
One branch of the family had a house on what is now the village green, immediately behind the photographer.
Constable is recorded as having stayed at the former Oaks Park mansion house in Woodmansterne with other members of the Constable family.

Comments:
That’s just how I remember it in the 1950s when the Rev Denis Lane was our Rector. He was a true friend to all the children in the village. It is much brighter now the North wing extension is there with its large windows which let in so much more light than before.
