RECTORY COTTAGES, RECTORY LANE,RECTORY COTTAGES, RECTORY LANE, WOODMANSTERNE, c1920's
View of the Rectory Cottages, opposite Eastlands Farm, looking down Rectory Lane towards Chipstead
Out of view beyond the cottages is the original Woodmansterne Rectory, which was demolished c1970.
It became redundant when the new Rectory was built on Woodmansterne Street in 1930.
At the turn of the century one of Woodmansterne's ponds stood here in the foreground, in the vicinity of the fallen tree.
It can be seen in this earlier c1905 view : picture #799
The former Woodmansterne National School stands next door, behind our RHS shoulder.

In another photo of the cottages, there is a TEAS sign on the front wall easily seen from the lane. I wonder what the name of the tea shop was. Did the pond have a name?

I have just found a mention of the Mere pond and Rectory pond in a paper dated Feb 1926 stating that due to their condition both the ponds are to be filled in. The Epsom Rural Council subcommittee decided their fate due to complaints.
So the pond in Rectory Lane, by the Rectory, was simply called Rectory Pond.

One of my Grandad's brothers lived in one of these – William Beckenham.
I did meet him as a child. He used to wear a trilby but I have no memory of his face.
His son, also William lived in Kingscroft Road (26 I think).
