Walton Boys Brigade.

This is the Boys Brigade Band which apparently paraded through the High Street on Sundays pictured during Wartime .

The leader was a Mr Tremayne, Cecil Thomas is playing the small drum, and Dickie Hunt on the bugle. Not sure of the date, but she thinks during WW2.

The photo comes from my aunt (89) who grew up in Walton.

Does anyone remember the game of "dodlums" ( I don't know if the spelling is correct but that's how it sounded) that was played in the pub (Fox??)in the High Street at least up to the 60s.

My memory of the game is vague, but it involved throwing along a table relatively heavy metal rings, which were probably about 4 inches diameter and with a hole in the middle. I'm not sure if there were skittles or what had to be hit. I seem to recall scoring started at 51 and counted downwards.

The table faced the window and had angled side boards at the end to catch any stray rings and additionally there was strong chainlink metal mesh against the windows as additional precaution.

The crashing of the metal rings could be heard whilst walking along the pavement outside the pub.

I don't know anywhere else this game was played. Was it unique to Walton-on-the-Hill?

Reply from LNW: the closest I can find is a game called Horse Collar shuffleboard but no doubt someone will enlighten us. The pub was probably The Fox and Hounds on Walton St.

I wonder if perhaps it could have been a game similar to Quoits that sailors played when becalmed in the Doldrums and over the years it became dodlums. I have never heard the name or the game.

I have just been watching The Footage Detectives on TPTV, there was a feature about the lost sport of Quoits as played in many a pub in the 50s and 60s. It showed heavy metal rings. You could also have matches outside, Mike Read said different areas and regions had their own versions of the game. This is not the game deck Quoits played with rope rings.

The pub was Fox and Hounds.
Very interesting about quoits and possible origin. Perhaps you had to throw the rings so they landed on "pegs" or a "peg" rather than knock them down. I can't remember now. One thing I do remember is the crashing noise.
