The Well – and Yewlands

Postcard sent in 1909 showing the Well – at the junction of Park Road with Woodmansterne Lane, taken from Park Road looking south. Of particular interest is the house to the right, Yewlands, built in the 18th century and demolished in 1937.

I have been searching for a photograph showing the house that was built after 'Yewlands' was demolished. The house was also called 'Yewlands' and was lived in by my grand-parents from 1953 until 1967 - Robert and Constance Pleace. It appeared on a postcard featuring the Old Well and on cups and saucers bought in the village.

Reply from LNW : I have many many cards showing the old well, mostly from 100 years ago or so, but I will go through and see what I can find for you. I also have a plate which shows the Well and a house or two behind. I wonder if that is what you are referring to [a photo of this plate has been added to this archive. Click on the small photo to view the full image.] If you have any image of the house, could you upload it to this site so I can identify the exact property. If it still exists, I can get a photo for you easily as I live just around the corner.

I came across your comment re the 1930s Yewlands House. My parents bought the house from Mr & Mrs Pleace and lived there until 1995. It was extended, adding another garage, enlarged sitting room and a sweep round drive added. The subsequent owners extended it further into the original garage and the side by the kitchen.

How lovely to find your response, to my query regarding my grand-parents' house, on my return from holiday.
Since my post, my husband and I have visited Banstead, en-route to Brighton; being my first visit since 1966 and, not only saw the house but, met the current owners. Also, on clearing out my mother's belongings, I have come across a postcard, depicting the Well and the house behind it, as well as some china.
The couple who live there, now, bought it from your parents and, it is wonderful to know that it continues to be a happy, family home.
Many, many thanks for taking the time to reply, to my post.

The house in the background is Yewlands Lodge. My Great Grandfather Joseph Hobson was the Head Gardener at Yewlands and brought up his family at the Lodge. Joseph was later Verger and Parish Clerk at All Saints Church for twenty years, his son Tom took over from him. I have a photo of the family taken in front of the Lodge in about 1900.
