The Grange and Yew Lodge

The top image shows Yew Lodge to the left-hand side of The Grange in Sutton Lane. The bottom image shows The Grange orchard with Yew Lodge in the distance.

There is a discussion about Yew Lodge accompanying picture #614. These images from the Banstead History archive have been added here in support of the view that image 484 does NOT show Yew Lodge.

Sylvia has been trying to ascertain when Yew Lodge was built and when the photos of it were taken.

Sources of information about this are limited, but it seems that the development of Grange Gardens commenced around the mid 1950s. Yew Lodge is shown as a named property, together with numbers 1-15 of Grange Gardens, on an OS map surveyed in 1957 and published in 1958.

On an earlier OS map (revised in 1933 and published in 1935), there is an unlabelled building marked exactly in the right position to be Yew Lodge. This same map also shows a large orchard beyond the building but directly in line with it, and a glass house along the side of the house that faces the orchard. This all ties up with the photo taken from the orchard, in which the glass house in front of Yew Lodge is visible if you look very closely.

As far as Sylvia can tell, Yew Lodge was built later than The Grange, since only small outbuildings are marked on the earliest maps and plans of The Grange estate. She has concluded that Yew Lodge itself must date from the 1920s or early 1930s, and that the photos of it must have been taken before the early 1950s, as they show no signs of the estate around the building having been developed.

Sylvia's best guess would be around the mid 1930s so the date above has been estimated at 1935.
