We all remember this junction. The 164 buses always seemed to meet here and block the road up. The conductor had to leg it down the road to where the vehicle can be seen, to make sure there was nothing coming the other way! Behind the wall on the right was the gardens of The Well House which was demolished around 1964. Hodgesons dairy went at the same time, along with the horse drawn milk carts.

There was also a time clock fixed to the shop wall where the conductor had to 'clock-in' by putting his card into a slot and pulling a lever. It had been known for the clock hands to be altered for the operation and then returned to their proper place after!

Now you mention it I remember those clocks for bus crews. I don't remember that particular one although certain bus stops had them. They stood on four legged stand usually. I thought there was one at the bus stop by the bomb site just to the left of the picture, but there wouldn't be two close together.

Yes of course, pre-V1 the clock was between the bus stop and the shops but I wouldn't be sure which side of Salisbury Road that it was.

The 164a bus had to mount the curb to get round this corner.
The bomb site was the remains of The Woolpack public house. The bus stop was just outside and the porch still standing. It was useful when it rained as shelter. Year 1947
