GARRATTS LANE, BANSTEADGARRATTS LANE, BANSTEAD, c1910 - 1925
A tree lined view along Garratts Lane, before Garratts Hall was demolished, possibly photographed in the vicinity of the Shrubland Road junction.
Garratts Hall was a large country house, formerly owned by the local Lambert family 1534 – 1744, then again 1857 – 1925. The property included Little Garratts, lodges, gardens and parkland totalling around 30 acres.
Between 1902 – 1930 Garratts Hall was let and became a Girls Boarding School run by Mrs Mary Louisa Davies. One former pupil was Megan Lloyd George, daughter of the Liberal Prime Minster David Lloyd George, who lived nearby at Walton On The Hill.
Garratts Hall was demolished in the 1930’s following the death of Mrs Davies, and the new roads Colcokes Road, Monks Road and Garrard Road laid down for housing.
Some properties still survive today : including “Little Garratts” and the two lodges - one at the junction of Garratts Lane with Holly Lane and the other at its junction with Shrubland Road.
