Banstead High Street and a magnificent fir treeThis is a Photochrom postcard showing the Victoria Hotel and Banstead High Street. The reference number is V8028, and the handwritten date on the reverse is 7 June 1957.
The predominant feature is, of course, the magnificent fir tree, which has featured in many postcards of the High Street - not least, along with many other trees, in a 1905 view (enter 555 in the search box above).
On the right, behind the belisha beacon, is the forecourt of Watkins Garage, and behind that is the Post Office and the Royal Mail sorting office. Plus, of course, the spire of All Saints church.

That’s how I remember the high street. The church spire looks magnificent, shame you can’t see it any more from that same position.
