Ye Olde Woolpack

A postcard photo of “Ye Olde Woolpack”, postmarked 12 September 1904 and published by William Pile of Sutton – once proprietor of The Banstead Herald (where, in 1960 at the age of 16, this contributor began his working life as a junior reporter).

The postcard is addressed to Miss W Barnard at 21 Wilton Street, Battersea Park, SW and reads on the front, “This is in Banstead village. Will you come and have a drink, eh! Miss Joyce thought Alice’s card to me simply sweet.”

And on the correspondence side, it continues, “Dear Molly, Thanks very much for finishing my dress. It does very nicely. I see Ma found the buttons. I got Miss Hilda’s letter alright [sic] They want a temp: p.m. till Oct 1st. I am to return early on 22nd. Mr F and Miss Enid are going to an open air home so they won’t be at Weybridge. I’m glad it is fine today. H is coming down. With love to all. I had a card from Nance last night. Yrs etc, Nell”.
