A letter for Miss Yardley...

Addresses were so much simpler then… a postal envelope bearing an Edward VII one penny stamp and postmarked Notting Hill, October 1903. Addressed simply to Miss Julia Yardley, c/o Mrs Maitland, Banstead, Surrey – and it reached its destination, of course.

The Maitland family were at Banstead Hall. Edward and Mary Maitland established a prep school there in the late 1880s
and when Edward died, Mary carried on running the school. Miss Julia Yardley was Matron at the school.

The inset photograph shows Mrs Maitland on the left and Miss Yardley on the right. The image is shown courtesy of the Sutton Past on Glass Archive
