On 26 November 2008, trading of shares in Woolworths Group was suspended, and its Woolworths and Entertainment UK subsidiaries entered administration.
Shortly afterwards, on 12 December, the Waitrose store in Banstead burnt to the ground. Waitrose took over the old Woolworths store, cleaned it thoroughly and opened what was termed 'Baby Banstead' on 12 February 2009.
Waitrose was rebuilt and opened on 26th Nov 2009. The old Woolworths store was eventually taken over by Lorimers which moved there from a smaller shop across the road.
