All Saints churchyard on a misty January morningThursday 13 Jan 2022. The walker can see over the low layer of mist but the white dog is lost to the world – temporarily.
BHRG's History of All Saints Church Banstead tells us that Sir Henry Lambert, commenting in 1923, referred to the churchyard as being "now covered with stone monuments, which are no improvement on the turf graves and wooden crosses of earlier generations".
There are several old chest tombs in the churchyard, of which two are Grade II listed. These belong to the Wilmot and Muggeridge families.
The churchyard has been enlarged several times, notably in 1861, 1904 and 1972 and now covers some five acres, which excludes The Orchard.

An interesting historical narrative, Lewis, and who's to say that Lambert was wrong? And what an outstandingly atmospheric capture, with early morning sunlight and shadows. Just beautiful.

Absolutely stunning. Ideal for framing or a page on a calendar, a true reflection of the sedate village both currently and in the past.
