The Old Well in 1908This is a postcard view of the Old Well in Banstead, postmarked 22 October 1908. It’s number 2 in the “G.P.R., Banstead” series ('GPR' being Gilbert Peterson Roberts, founder of Roberts' Stores).
The postcard is addressed to Miss N. Clary, Newsells Park, Royston, Herts. A quick internet search reveals that Newsells Park was a country house which later became a successful stud farm. Among its breeding successes was a thoroughbred named Parthia, which won the Derby in 1959.

For those who are unaware "G.P.R." would be Gilbert Peterson Roberts, who lived opposite the pond at the Post Office, Burgh Heath, and published numerous other local views hereabouts.
The very first Burgh Heath manual telephone exchange was situated in a hut behind his shop.
He died on the 2nd October 1955 in Shoreham By Sea and is buried in St Andrews Church in Kingswood.

The wooden door by the horse and cart allowed entry to an outbuilding on the grounds, and while that too is long gone, the dropped kerb remains.
