Edward J. Bond 6.10.1931 - 13.05.2022We have just received the sad news that Ted Bond, a long time member of the Banstead History Research Group, passed away on Friday 13 May 2022. He was a very active member and gave talks to the local schools and wrote books on Burgh Heath and Woodmansterne.
Ted was instrumental in raising the funds to pay for the installation of a plaque on the outer wall of the Chancel at St Paul's Church Warren Road, Nork, in memory of the men from the Banstead Cottage Homes (later Beechholme), who lost their lives in WWI. The plaque replaced the War Memorial which was demolished by the developers Rush & Tompkins when the school was closed to make way for the High Beeches estate. In addition, he arranged for a Roll of Honour to be placed inside St Paul's church to replace the one which was lost in the devastating fire of the chapel in Beechholme.
Ted was a staunch member of the Royal British Legion and actively participated in the annual remembrance services; he is pictured above acting as Master of Ceremonies in 2015. Ted also took an active role during the World War I memorial services held in All Saints Church in 2014-19 being the standard bearer at some of the services. He was also a member of the Banstead Horticultural Society and frequently won prizes for his exquisite and, often, award winning sweet peas.
He will be much missed.
