Waitrose (Branch 112) replaced Wingfield House It opened in June 1965 and boasted some 4500 square feet of selling space and 20 car parking spaces at the rear. This photograph must have been taken after 1978 when the second floor was added, doubling the amount of selling space. Gaining planning permission took many years.
Waitrose provided soft background music for its customers!
The Gazette dated 26 June 1965 describes a magnificent picture window with views over the Surrey hills and trees to distant London.
The Waitrose archives tell us that the Banstead store moved to another location at the eastern end of the High Street in November 1990 and M&S Simply Food now occupies the Wingfield House site in a new building.
The original site was the location of Wingfield farm, later Winkworth's Farm.

I can remember when it was opened in 1965. It was like no other supermarket I had seen before. Yes it had soft music playing and it was so clean and fresh and very spacious. It had spotless shiny flooring not a wooden floor like other shops. It was so unlike Tescos opposite the church where you could hardly move because of stock piled up in boxes waiting to be put out for sale.
