All Saints Church postcardSeasonal postcard sent in 1911 to Mrs Buckland of 20 Tramway Terrace, Mitcham Junction, from her loving brother, Albert.
The message says;
Dear Alice,
Just a line to wish you many happy returns of the day and prosperity and good health for one and all for the New Year.

"With the Season's Greeting" is probably the oddest use of English I've ever seen on a postcard!

Peter Blowfield remembers cycling up Shove’s Path by the Institute and leaving his bike (unlocked) leaning against the church wall when he went to sing.
There were three or four Sunday services and they were paid for each that they sung at. Apparently the real earners were the weddings, with sometimes two or three on a Saturday. They were paid 2s 6d to sing and 3s if they sung a solo.

As a 1950s choirboy (but never a soloist) at All Saints when the Rev Frederick Schofield was vicar, I happily endorse Peter Blowfield's recollection that Saturday weddings were our nice little earners - half a crown per wedding, and if we had two on a Saturday we really felt that God was on our side as the coins jangled in our pockets on the way home. We also, I remember, received a Christmas bonus - partly as a reward for singing our little hearts out at the midnight service, way past our bedtimes. Goodness, such times!
