Oak Timbers, Banstead High StreetThis postcard of Banstead High Street and Oak Timbers is postmarked 22 May 1937. The grass area of Oak Timbers has decorative chains round it, and note the three newly-planted saplings, as well. The Village School (Banstead County Junior) is on the left. The registration number of the parked car is HX6365.
On the reverse, there’s no indication as to the printer or publisher of the postcard, but the reference number on the front is 22.
If you’re interested in postage rates, the postcard bears a 1d George VI stamp – enough to transport it to Mr Chas Norman Legg, 3878 Chamoune Ave, San Diego, California, US. “You will have had a long wait for your mail from the time we left New Orleans until we arrived here because they didn’t take our letters off the boat as we expected. However I think from the time we arrived we’ve kept you well posted. This is the village street at Banstead.”

This scene has hardly changed at all, except for the type of car, seen there (or in, the fact that the High Street was empty of traffic, here!)

This scene is still very familiar to me. About five doors along was Titus Ward's, where they used to weigh up sugar and pour it into blue paper bags. Next door was the United Dairies, where we used to get most of our rations. In 1980, the building on the corner was an estate agents, who sold my family house in Sandersfield Road.
