Remembrance Sunday Service at the War Memorial

On a grey morning, the people of Banstead once again gathered around their memorial to remember the men of two world wars whose names are engraved on the Portland stone monument at the eastern end of the village High Street.

The parade meandered its way along the main road and was brought to attention for the start of the ceremony.

The service took the traditional format and included readings and prayers by local clergy and dignitaries, as well as the Last Post played by a young trumpeter, followed by the two minutes silence.

Wreaths were laid on behalf of numerous local organisations.

The service ended with a rendition of the Kohima Epitaph, the singing of the National Anthem and a final blessing.

All these years later the people of Banstead remain proud to remember the men from the village and others who never came back home.

If readers would like to know more about the memorial and the men listed on it Banstead History have published two books which will be of interest
