Banstead Girls' Life Brigade

In 1951 the Banstead branch of the Girls´ Brigade (then called the Girls´ Life Brigade) held its Annual Display in the Hall at Banstead County Secondary Girls School in Picquets Way. An audience of parents and friends watched activities pursued by the members at their weekly meetings, including marching in drill formation, country dancing, PT exercises and (seen here) singing around a model of a camp fire.

Seated round the ‘fire’, starting bottom left and proceeding clockwise, are Wendy Phillips and Pam Jones sharing a jacket over their shoulders, Rosemary Taylerson, Irene Hepburn, Daphne Sweet, Anne (surname unknown), Jean Eaton, Pat Thorpe, Pat Gates, Jenny Nash, Shirley Breedon and three unknown juniors with Lieut. Chambers, the leader. The surnames given here, by the way, were before marriage.

Comments:
I remember Captain Chambers, she was very strict. We used to meet in the Methodist church rooms at the back.

I was seven at the time this photo was taken, so not in this snap. We used to parade our banners at the 11am church service once a month.
