Colcokes Road

This postcard of Colcokes Road appears to date from the late 1930s, ie only a few years after the houses shown on the left of the road were constructed. The building shown on the extreme right is doubtless the stables of Garratts Hall; these are of course still there. It is not easy to reconcile the rooflines (in particular chimneys) of the houses in the photograph with those existing today, and the image apparently predates house construction in this part of the road on the right-hand side since nothing is visible beyond the stables.

Comments:
In 1964 I started work at Mr Henderson’s stables. I worked six and a half days for £3 a week. If the stables cobbled yard had even a piece of straw on it at Sunday’s knock off time we had to completely re sweep and hose it down. Mr Henderson was ex military and that’s how it was run.
