Mowing the lawn in Hillside Close

Following on from picture #666, here’s another photograph of Joy Hughes in her garden at 36 Hillside Close, Banstead. The date is 25th June 1955, and this time she’s in her pinny and sensible shoes as she mows the lawn. She's posing in front of her prefab home, erected by Banstead Council in 1947. In the background can be seen a corrugated iron shed, which I believe began its life as an air raid shelter.

Joy's mower, by the way, was manufactured by Thomas Green & Son Ltd. They were founded in 1835 as an engineering company, and in 1914 they began specialising in lawn mowers and garden rollers. On the grass box is the emblem GREENS LEEDS & LONDON.

This photograph is kindly supplied by James Crouch of BHRG.
