100 years of the Banstead War Memorial

This is the window of W A Truelove and Son Ltd. in Banstead High Street, laid out to celebrate the anniversary of the unveiling of the Banstead War Memorial on 5 June 1921. This company has a long history of looking after the memorial dating back to the 1930s.

In 1947, Reverend Canon Skene requested the addition of thirty-four names of the local men who fell in WWII and W A Truelove and Sons completed the work at short notice, in time for Remembrance Day.

This year the company has generously donated a plaque to commemorate the centenary, and the Banstead Branch of the Royal British Legion will oversee the laying of it in time for the anniversary.

The display material shown above is taken from the Banstead History Research Group's latest publication which covers the history of the memorial and much more, in over 100 pages, which include many previously unpublished photographs.

Next time you go past the Memorial please spare a moment to take a closer look and remember why it is there.
