Banstead War Memorial centenary

The Banstead War Memorial was unveiled on 5 June 1921, exactly 100 years ago.

The centenary plaque shown here was inscribed by stonemason David Woodley, and was generously donated by W A Truelove and Son.

The photograph was taken at the end of the process and shows the colouring applied in order for David to be able to see exactly what he is engraving. The colour is removed to leave the clean Portland stone face which ironically makes the inscription harder to read, but of course is in keeping with the inscriptions on the Memorial.

Next time you go past the Memorial please spare a moment to take a closer look.

For further information about the centenary and a special publication documenting the full story of the Memorial's 100 years, please visit picture #686.
