The Well and memories of Ron and Peggy Mason

This unusual card (size and shape) was sent to us by Margaret Davis who lives in Australia and who purchased the card during a trip to the UK in 1965. She goes on to say:

"I did enjoy the seven months I spent in your part of Surrey while nursing at Tadworth Court, the country branch of Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital. It was then I met Ron and Peggy Mason.

Whilst working in the book department at Harrods in December 1964, the lovely lady in charge urged me to go and visit them. It was easy to get the bus to Banstead and the Masons greeted me with big smiles and open arms. They were very dear, warm friendly people, vitally interested in all people, and it was wonderful to be able to visit them when I had afternoons off duty.
I understand Ron used to give literature adult education classes in the Banstead area at that time. They remained special friends until their deaths, some 15 or 20 years later.

During a later visit I introduced them to my daughter and 10 years later when she revisited the UK, they were the people she wanted to go and see, still living in Woodman's Cottage, Park Road.

Such happy memories of lovely people and places, so I was delighted to find a new link via Banstead History."

Comments:
My Mother was a weekend telephonist at Tadworth Court in the 1960s. I can remember going with my Dad to pick her up at 10 pm after her shifts. She said it was a happy place to work especially at Christmas time, with all the excited children. Nice to see the well and buildings exactly as I remember them.

Hodges dairy, horse drawn milk floats stabled near the Woolpack Pub.

I lived at the bottom of Buff Avenue. Late 50s lots of memories good and not so good.

79 now, probably many of my friends have passed on. If you’re interested further, advise ok.

Response from LNW: Hello Vincent, always interested to hear from Banstead residents, of whatever era, especially would like more memories and photographs.

Peter Wells' book, Banstead Urchins might bring back a lot of memories see picture #708
