Glyn Maddocks, teacher with his heart in rugby

Glyn Maddocks (centre, arms folded) was a teacher at Banstead County Secondary Boys School, Picquets Way, in the late 1950s. His subject was woodwork – but, being a Welshman, he was completely obsessed with rugby union.

Wherever Glyn was, an oval rugby ball was lurking. No woodwork lesson would ever be complete without at least one interruption with the ball being tossed round the room and, of course, the more sports-minded boys loved it. Whether he was a good woodwork teacher or not, I haven’t the foggiest idea – but I’m sure he’d have made a terrific rugby coach (no chance at Picquets Way, though – that was strictly football.)

Here he is on a school cycling trip in 1957. On the left is Fraser Hinkley, and on the right are Ray (‘Ginger’) Turner and Peter Worsfold. The location, and the boy massaging his thigh next to Glyn, are unknown.

Comments:
There was a rugby team at the school for a very short time, due entirely to Glyn's enthusiasm (obsession?!) but this came to a stop with his departure. I recall that it did rather well, even against schools that had established teams, e.g., Reigate Grammar. My old mate Ray Nutley was in the team and their shirts were red and white stripes.
