The girls by the old well in Park RdWe need your help! This postcard dates from 1909 and we are lucky enough to have all the children's names.
We are currently compiling the stories of these girls in a 'What happened next?' local history publication. The stories are very varied – one became a military wife and travelled to many countries, Malta, India, Singapore etc with her army career husband.
One went into service and recounts the stories of working for wealthy families as a nursemaid and parlour maid.
Yet another had a lovely soprano voice and entertained on stage during WWI. She was a very elegant lady and had a big influence on her granddaughters – one became a singer and also appeared on television many times, including an episode of 'Allo 'Allo!. The other is a creative artist who has exhibited at the V&A.
There is much more research to be done so if you know of any of the girls, do please get in touch.
Standing by the well is Maggie Muggeridge. To the right (so to her left) is Gladys Hicks, then Dolly Crawley, Emily Farley, Annie Birt and, in the distance, Rose Harbour.
The man with the bicycle was the insurance man, but we have no name for him . . . yet.
The publication will be available this summer (2024).
