'Flying Bedstead', Yewlands Close!

Brian Lloyd Jacob testing the 'flying bedstead' at Yewlands Close, Banstead.
He remembers it as if it were just the other day.....circa 1947

Reply from LNW: Do tell us a bit more about him - he sounds like an interesting man.

My goodness, that steering wheel must have come from a lorry, or even a bus! If only bedsteads could talk...

Hi Lindsey,
There is another aspect of this photograph which is of interest and that is the temporary-looking buildings in the background.

I believe there were some allotments in that area or maybe temporary housing after the war. Is your dad able to tell us a bit more, as that is the only photograph I have seen which shows the structures.

There were indeed huts, as my father referred to them. Probably accommodation left over from the war years for the possible use of service personnel. As a young married couple my Mother and Father lived there and I was born there. We moved to Tadworth for a year or two and then moved back to Yewlands Close when the new houses were built around 1951.

One of our members had a chat with Brian and it appears that the buildings in the background were put up for temporary accommodation for soldiers after the war. Latterly used for Gurkhas.

There was a large mess hall (r) side.

The dormitories were heated by pot bellied stoves.

Site developed by AJ Waite builders. Brian Andrews?

In 1938/9 only two houses were built in Yewlands Close. The one on the right side was requisitioned in 38/39 and left in a bad state.
