The Old Well – 'Isn’t the weather dreadful'This postcard of the Old Well, Banstead, is postmarked 2pm February 17 1904 – so it’s a chilly midwinter afternoon. It’s addressed to Miss AE Moore, 7 The Grange, Wimbledon SW, and the sender is complaining about the dreadful weather.
The postcard was published by William Pile of Sutton – which also published the Banstead Herald and Sutton & Cheam Herald newspapers. Pile’s stationery emporium occupied a prime corner site on the junction of Sutton High Street and Carshalton Road; their printing presses were in Hackbridge.
At about the same time, GPR published a complementary series of local postcards, including a view similar to this – see picture #723. GPR was Gilbert Peterson Roberts, founder of Roberts’ Stores.

Picture a small group of 10-year-öld girls performimg in a tap-dance display in the grounds of the Well House, to the right of the well. At that time I went to Belmont every Saturday morning to a children´s class held by the "Women´s League of Health and Beauty"; we did exercises and tap-dancing. The occasion was a garden meeting of the Banstead WI held at the invitation of Mrs Clay of Well House.

Whenever I see a photo of the well, I see the beautiful Ornamental Flowering Cherry Blossom trees which grew inside the grounds of Well House and lined the wall 70 years ago.
I remember it in front of the wonderful pink blossoms which never lasted long but were such a sight to see.
