The Old Well, BansteadAn early 20th century postcard image from the war memorial end of Banstead High Street (see also picture #93 and picture #606) – this time the perspective is looking south from Park Road towards the Old Well, with Woodmansterne Lane on the left and the original Yewlands house in the distance. The high edifice on the left is an outbuilding in the grounds of Well House, and the well-fenced property on the right was known as The Cottage. Yewlands was demolished in 1937 – see also picture #307
It was to be another 14 years before the war memorial was erected, roughly in the spot where the photographer captured this image.
The card is postmarked 11 November 1907 and is addressed to Mrs Crocket, 55 Harders Road, High Street, Peckham SE: “My dear Mama, All being well I am coming to see you tomorrow Tuesday, shall arrive sometime during the morning. Should it be wet, will try Thursday. Love to all. Trusting you are quite well. Much love, Nina”
