Banstead County Secondary Girls School

In answer to a query from Jenny Bailey (picture #504), here’s a photograph of Banstead County Secondary Girls School in Picquets Way, taken around 1957. The building was the mirror image of the boys’ school, which is behind the photographer. Note the fine elm tree, which was in the centre of the playing field: it marked the dividing line between the schools, and woe betide any boy who strayed into the girls’ territory... and, of course, vice versa!

Thank you for the photograph Peter, I remember the tree and the rules.
My older sister remembered the Air Raid shelters in front of the girls School. Filled in about 1950 - 51
She had said the girls school was akin to “St Trinians” totally disjointed until they bought in the new headmistress to
“Clean up the School”. New uniforms, no high heels, no mini skirts, blouses buttoned up to the neck, lots of discipline. Many many more detentions..
When I started there they asked each class to choose a paint colour for our form room. We choose green.
And a one-way system around the school to help with the discipline.
There was still the odd hiccup in the first year or so – as the older girls left the younger ones conformed to the rules.

Despite the rigid rules separating the boys from the girls on the playing field bisected with the elm tree, there were occasions when boys crossed this line. Looking to the left of the girl's school image and situated tight to the boundary fence, were two temporary classrooms. The one closer to the boys school was refereed to as 'Check Point Charlie' but still on the girls side of the field and served as our History classroom led by Mr. Harvey. Our trek from the boys main building led us past the long and high jump pits. History became quite pleasant.

Has anyone got photos of the old boys school, when I was at the girls school, the boy school was a single storey red brick school,
Looked as if it was built early 1900s.

Jenny, we have a few photographs where the boys school appears in the background, to varying degrees - see picture #619, picture #797 and picture #510. And, to anyone else out there, we're always on the lookout for more!
